Historic Strathalbyns first hospital was established in 1905 as a small cottage hospital, to meet the needs of a growing rural town and district community. From these humble beginnings, nearly 100 years ago, a modern health service comprising of 90 beds has evolved.

The hospital is a part of the Strathalbyn and District Health Service, which incorporates a public hospital, residential aged care and a day care centre to meet the needs of a growing community.

The Health Service is conveniently located in the centre of Strathalbyn in a quiet picturesque rural setting overlooking the River Angus and historic St Andrews church.

The hospital provides clinical services and facilities for the treatment of patients in the local government areas of Strathalbyn and the Meadows ward of the Mount Barker District Council and to some extent Port Elliot & Goolwa. These clinical services include:
